Tink vs Grafana Cloud
Grafana Cloud is hosted observability: Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and dashboards billed on active series and ingest. That is not a mechanic. Tink installs in one command, watches the Linux server, explains what is wrong, and helps you fix it.
Grafana Cloud graphs production. Tink answers “why is this VPS sick?”
Accidental sysadmins land on Grafana Cloud because the free forever tier looks cheap and the dashboards look familiar. Then the work is Alloy pipelines, the bill is cardinality, and a full disk still means you SSH in.
Tink is the other job: detect the issue on the machine, say why it happened in plain English, propose the command, and run it only after you approve. Keep Grafana Cloud if you already operate OpenTelemetry and want hosted Mimir/Loki/Tempo. Use Tink if you run Linux servers and want a mechanic. Self-hosting Grafana + Prometheus is a different comparison.
| Feature | Tink | Grafana Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | 30 seconds (one curl | sh command) | Hours — Grafana Alloy or OpenTelemetry Collector, then dashboards and alert rules |
| What you get | Working monitoring, diagnosis, and approved fixes | Hosted Grafana with Mimir metrics, Loki logs, Tempo traces, and IRM |
| Pricing | Free (Scout) / $9 / $29 per machine per month | Usage SaaS — active series, log GB, traces; Free forever then Pro usage |
| Hidden costs | None — fully managed | Cardinality explosions, Alloy pipelines, Adaptive Telemetry tuning, and PromQL homework |
| Monitoring approach | Agent on the server — CPU, disk, services, logs, certs, ports | You ship telemetry; Grafana Cloud stores and graphs it |
| Configuration | None after install — heuristics and AI | Alloy configs, data sources, dashboards, recording rules, and notification policies |
| Plain-English diagnosis | Yes — AI explains root cause, impact, and fix | Grafana Assistant can investigate dashboards — you still write the fix |
| Fix execution | Proposes and executes approved commands with an audit trail | Observability only — Grafana Cloud cannot restart nginx or free disk |
| Alerting | Built-in across 8 channels | Grafana Alerting + OnCall after you define each query and contact point |
| Predictive alerts | Yes — disk fills in ~6 days, memory and CPU trends | Recording rules and SLO burns you write yourself |
| SSH brute-force detection | Built-in — parses auth.log every scan | Only if you ship auth.log to Loki and write a LogQL alert |
| Machine offline detection | Agent presence monitoring with multi-channel alerts | Only if node_exporter is scraped and an up{} rule is firing |
| Public status page | Shareable URL with 90-day history | Public dashboards possible — not a first-class customer status page |
| Weekly fleet digest | Automated Monday digest + daily brief when issues are open | Dashboards and Alerting — not a plain-English fleet narrative |
| On-call tracking | Built-in /oncall command + incident acknowledgment | Grafana IRM / OnCall as a separate paid workflow |
| Conversation interface | Telegram, WhatsApp, web dashboard, CLI | Grafana UI, Slack, and Grafana Assistant |
| Learning curve | None — works after install | Steep — PromQL, LogQL, TraceQL, Alloy, and dashboard ops |
| Best for | Freelancers, small teams, accidental sysadmins (1-50 Linux servers) | Teams already standardized on Grafana who will operate telemetry pipelines |
When Grafana Cloud is the right choice
Keep Grafana Cloud when you already want that exact job:
- Hosted Grafana you already live in — dashboards, folders, and on-call already sit in Grafana Labs SaaS.
- Metrics, logs, and traces together — Mimir + Loki + Tempo with OpenTelemetry already flowing.
- A platform team that will operate Alloy — someone who will fight cardinality and write PromQL.
- App latency, not a sick VPS — you need traces more than disk, certs, and nginx.
The real cost of “just use Grafana Cloud”
The free forever tier is already in the signup flow. A working ops loop for five Linux boxes is not:
- A pretty CPU panel still means you SSH in and read logs by hand
- Disk, nginx, certs, and SSH brute-force are not Grafana Cloud's default job
- Active series and log ingest start well above a $9/machine mechanic once cardinality lands
- A single VPS with no OpenTelemetry still needs a mechanic, not a hosted Grafana org
For a 5-server team, Tink Mechanic at $45/month is cheaper than a Grafana Cloud usage bill that grows with series and log volume, and every scan includes a diagnosis a dashboard will not type.
No active-series bill. No Alloy homework. No PromQL. One command install.
