Tink vs Grafana Mimir
Grafana Mimir is a horizontally scalable, multi-tenant Prometheus-compatible TSDB. It is not a finished monitoring product. Tink installs in one command, watches the server, explains what is wrong, and helps you fix it.
Mimir stores samples. Tink answers “what should I do?”
Accidental sysadmins land on Mimir because Prometheus filled the disk and Grafana Labs said this is the scale-out path. Then the work is distributors, ingesters, store-gateways, compactors, and a hash ring — still no diagnosis when nginx is down at 2am.
Tink is the other job: detect the issue on the machine, say why it happened in plain English, propose the command, and run it only after you approve. Keep Mimir if you already run Prometheus at cluster scale and need multi-tenant long-term samples. Use Tink if you run Linux servers and want a mechanic.
| Feature | Tink | Grafana Mimir |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | 30 seconds (one curl | sh command) | Days — Kubernetes, object storage, hash rings, then distributors, ingesters, queriers, compactors |
| What you get | Working monitoring, diagnosis, and approved fixes | Multi-tenant Prometheus-compatible long-term metrics storage |
| Pricing | Free (Scout) / $9 / $29 per machine per month | Open source — plus Kubernetes, object storage, and a platform team |
| Hidden costs | None — fully managed | S3/GCS bills, ingester RAM, compaction jobs, and Grafana Cloud Metrics if you skip self-hosting |
| Query language | Plain English in Telegram or the web dashboard | PromQL across a horizontally sharded Mimir cluster |
| Plain-English diagnosis | Yes — AI explains root cause, impact, and fix | No — you still read series, labels, and Grafana panels |
| Fix execution | Proposes and executes approved commands with an audit trail | Metrics only — Mimir cannot restart nginx or free disk |
| Alerting | Built-in across 8 channels | Ruler + Alertmanager microservices — still a separate paging stack |
| Predictive alerts | Yes — disk fills in ~6 days, memory and CPU trends | Only if you write recording rules and forecast queries |
| SSH brute-force detection | Built-in — parses auth.log every scan | Requires a log exporter plus custom PromQL |
| Machine offline detection | Agent presence monitoring with multi-channel alerts | up{} across remote-write tenants — you still write the alert |
| Public status page | Shareable URL with 90-day history | Not included — pair Grafana or a third-party status tool |
| Weekly fleet digest | Automated Monday digest + daily brief when issues are open | Not included |
| On-call tracking | Built-in /oncall command + incident acknowledgment | Not included — add Grafana OnCall, PagerDuty, or another pager |
| Learning curve | None — works after install | High — Prometheus remote-write plus Mimir microservices, hash rings, and object storage |
| Best for | Freelancers, small teams, accidental sysadmins (1-50 Linux servers) | Platform teams that already run Prometheus and need multi-tenant metrics at cluster scale |
When Grafana Mimir is the right choice
Keep Mimir when you already have Prometheus and need it for work Tink does not do:
- Multi-tenant Prometheus at cluster scale — hundreds of millions of series with isolation between teams.
- Years of raw samples in object storage — retention that outlives a local TSDB disk.
- Grafana Cloud Metrics or a Cortex successor — you already standardized on Grafana Labs metrics backends.
- A platform team that already operates Kubernetes — hash rings, ingesters, and compaction are someone's job.
The real cost of “just add Mimir”
The binary is free. A working long-term Prometheus is not:
- Prometheus, node_exporter, scrape jobs, and remote-write still have to exist first
- Distributor, ingester, querier, store-gateway, compactor, ruler, and usually Alertmanager
- Object storage bills and compaction that can stall queries if mis-tuned
- Days to stand up on Kubernetes, then ongoing ring and bucket operations
- Still no diagnosis or fix — only samples you can PromQL later
For a 5-server team, Tink Mechanic at $45/month is cheaper than the first week of standing up Mimir, and every scan includes a diagnosis Mimir will never write.
No hash rings. No object store. No PromQL. One command install.
